The Kindrochaid Flock

The Kindrochaid flock was established in 1993 and currently numbers 26 breeding Icelandic ewes. We are situated in the northwest corner of the Island of Islay.

The Icelandics are just a small part of the farming activities which comprise
36 breeding Highland cows (and followers) and 540 breeding ewes - mostly
Scottish blackface sheep bred pure but also some crossed with the Blue-faced
Leicester ram to produce Scottish mule lambs.
Although the farming is an economic enterprise the primary objective of the
land management is to maintain the high nature conservation interest of the
areas - particularly the breeding choughs. This is a species that we have been
studying (through the Scottish Chough Study Group) since 1982 and have
published a number of papers on chough and also on low-intensity farming.
