Icelandic sheep lamb easily. They usually have twins, and triplets about as often as they have singles. The ewes are excellent mothers with plenty of milk. So much so that Icelandics can also be used as dairy sheep.
Although small at birth, the lambs show remarkable vigour and are very soon up on their feet and feeding. This vigour at birth is known to be carried over if an Icelandic is crossed with another less hardy breed.
The lambs grow very quickly and soon look to be nearly the same size as their mothers.
